Renovation Story 2: It's Fun to Make Old Homes Like New

Remember the movie?

Sound familiar to any Homeowners out there?

This Renovation Adventure is about a 2 1/2 Story, Wood-Sided early 1900-built home... with the coolest vintage Carriage House as the Single Car Garage! (See before and after photo) Clearly the old dirt roads traveled by horses led to this and many other Carriage Houses built at the time.

Well, we used three 30 yard dumpsters to clear this home out. It's humbling to remember how willing family and friends were to put on a mask and tackle a days work or two with us. This house was mostly cleaned and painted, really. The kitchen floor was a beast to take up all the layers of linoleum and tile to get to the original Birch Hardwood Floors. Andy turned the Unfinished Attic into a Fabulous Guest Suite with a Full Private Bathroom; all while exposing the Attic Windows and Beams to add to the Architectural Character. There were 3 perfect size bedrooms all in a row with a small office/bedroom off of the Master. We gutted the 2nd Story Bath to the Studs and put in 11 x 13 tile around the Shower and Floor. It was gorgeous: New Vanity, Luv, Two shower heads, and a wide open Towel Shelf.

One of the funniest moments was insulating the attic floor. It was just the two of us. One was outside turning on the insulation machine and the other was inside directing the tube into the attic boards. The insulation tube went from the machine, in the front door, around three flights of stairs and 3 landings... and as were hollering back and forth to start and stop the machine, the tube would occasionally pop off at different sections! That was a mess! And we were delirious at that point. We had to keep from laughing to get the other person to hear "Stop! Turn it off!".
